Manzanita & Hug Point Engagement Session | Madi & nick

Oregon Coast engagement session at Hug Point with couple flying a kite at sunset

Madi and Nick entrusted me with a coast game plan and one request that really shaped the whole afternoon. They wanted whispering winds, Oregon coastal variety, and a session that felt like the coast rather than just a beach.

So naturally, I headed to Manzanita early.

One of my favorite parts of planning sessions like this is giving myself enough time to wander a little before my couples arrive. I knew I wanted forest, grass, sand, ocean, and something that felt a little more tucked away than the obvious beach access. After driving around and scouting, I ended up finding a horse camping area and trail just outside of town that felt almost too perfect.

The trail started under the trees, surrounded by that lush Oregon Coast greenery, then opened into warm grass and sandy bluffs overlooking the ocean. And somehow, we had the entire place to ourselves. Not a single soul.

It gave us exactly the kind of variety I had been hoping for without ever feeling like we were moving through a checklist of locations.

By the time Madi and Nick arrived, it already felt like we had known each other forever. That has honestly been one of my favorite parts of getting to know them. Their wedding is next June at Crescent Lake, back home in Central Oregon, and every time I spend time with them I get more excited for it. There is such a sweetness to the way they are together.

Nick absolutely dotes on Madi. He has this grounding, steady presence with her, and you can see how safe and loved she feels around him. She softens around him, but never in a way that makes her smaller. If anything, it gives her even more freedom to be playful, expressive, a little sassy, and completely herself.

Which became especially obvious when the kite came out. After the forest and bluff portion of the session, we headed down toward the beach and eventually to Hug Point for the second half of the evening. For September on the Oregon Coast, the weather could not have been more perfect. Clear sky, soft wind, warm light, hardly a cloud anywhere, and the kind of sunset that made the entire beach feel golden. Hug Point gave us the opposite side of the coast from the grassy bluff. Open shoreline, sandstone cliffs, little pockets of shells and barnacles, and just enough water moving through the beach to catch the light.

And then Madi and Nick pulled out a kite.

It instantly became one of my favorite parts of the session. There is something about movement that changes everything. Instead of thinking about posing, they were running through the water, laughing, pulling the kite behind them, getting tangled in the ribbons, and just being together. The photos started feeling less like engagement photos and more like little stills from a story.

Those are always the moments I am looking for.

The transitions.
The almost-poses.
The seconds where they forget I am there.

We ended the evening in cozier outfits, wrapped up together in a Pendleton blanket while the sun disappeared into the Pacific. It could not have been a more Oregon way to tell this chapter of their story. From the forest trail to the sandy bluffs, the beach, the cliffs, the kite, and the final few minutes of sunset, this session felt like exactly what Madi and Nick asked for. Soft, windswept, a little playful, and completely theirs.

And now I am counting down the days until we get to do it all over again, just this time at Crescent Lake with all of their favorite people around them.
