A Snowy McCall Engagement Session | Michelle & Clayton
SOME LOVE STORIES FEEL LIKE HOME FROM THE VERY BEGINNING.
Some couples have a way of making love look effortless.
Not because it hasn't required intention, but because they've chosen each other so completely that being together feels as natural as breathing. That's Michelle and Clayton.
They met in Idaho, where Clayton grew up and Michelle had moved after spending her childhood in Columbia County, Oregon. Somewhere between mountain mornings and ordinary days, they found the kind of partnership that quietly becomes the foundation for everything else.
When we met before sunrise in McCall for their winter engagement session, it was immediately clear that very little direction would be needed.
I simply pointed toward the mountains and said,
"Walk that way."
The rest belonged to them.
BEFORE THE WORLD WOKE UP.
Long before most of McCall had poured its first cup of coffee, we were hiking through more than three feet of fresh snow toward one of Michelle and Clayton's favorite places.
As the first light reached the surrounding peaks, the valley slowly began to glow beneath us. The cold was sharp enough to make every breath visible, yet Michelle somehow managed outfit changes in the snow without missing a beat—a level of commitment that still deserves its own applause.
The mountains have a way of slowing everything down. There wasn't a rush to create perfect photographs. There was only the quiet rhythm of the morning, footsteps through fresh snow, and two people who looked completely at home beside one another.
A PLACE THAT SHAPES THE PEOPLE WHO LIVE THERE.
McCall is often known as one of Idaho's favorite mountain destinations, but spending time there reminds you that it's much more than a place people visit.
It's a place people build lives.
Weekends are spent snowmobiling into the backcountry, casting a line into alpine lakes, soaking in nearby hot springs, browsing local antique stores, or catching up with neighbors at the tavern after a day outside. That spirit of adventure isn't something Michelle and Clayton schedule into their lives.
It's simply how they live.
Clayton works alongside his brothers in the family's welding business. Michelle creates beautiful leather goods by hand. Together, they're building a home on family property where they'll soon exchange vows—a place that already holds the beginning of their story. Around here, life isn't separated from the landscape.
It grows alongside it.
MOVEMENT OVER POSING.
One of my favorite things about photographing Michelle and Clayton was how naturally they moved together.
Clayton has long been the willing participant behind Michelle's camera whenever inspiration strikes, so being photographed together already felt familiar. Instead of carefully posing every frame, I simply gave them a destination.
"Walk to that tree."
"Run down the trail."
"Meet each other halfway."
Everything in between happened on its own. The laughter. The quiet glances. The moments that can't be planned. Those are always the photographs I'm chasing.
A WEEKEND WORTH REMEMBERING.
This engagement session became just one part of a weekend spent enjoying everything that makes McCall feel like McCall.
We wandered through vintage and western shops, found one of the best brunches I've had in a long time, drove to nearby hot springs, shared milkshakes, and ended the weekend at the local tavern watching the Winter Olympics alongside people who call this mountain town home.
It reminded me that the best photographs rarely happen in isolation.
They're shaped by conversations, communities, places, and the people who invite you into them. The camera simply records what already exists.
UNTIL JULY.
In just a few months, these same mountains will witness another chapter.
On July 11th, Michelle and Clayton will stand together on the property they've been building from the ground up and promise forever in front of the people they love most.
There's something beautifully fitting about beginning a marriage in a place built by your own hands.
Thank you, Michelle and Clayton, for trusting me to document this season—and for reminding me that sometimes the greatest adventures begin simply by finding the right person to come home to.
